What causes arm pain?

Rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow, and tendonitis are three of the many possible causes of arm pain. But when your arm is healthy, or the pain radiates through your shoulder and down your arm, the problem most likely originates in your neck (cervical spine).

Any problem in your neck that causes a pinched nerve can lead to arm pain. While you may suffer a compressed nerve due to an injury, spondylosis is one of the most common causes.

Spondylosis refers to age-related degenerative changes that naturally occur from daily wear and tear on your neck. These changes lead to several conditions, including a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, and cervical joint arthritis. These conditions then compress the nerves that result in arm pain.

It’s also important to remember that pain radiating down your left arm is a common sign of a heart attack. Call for emergency medical care if your arm pain appears suddenly, worsens over a few minutes, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, indigestion, or pain in your back, neck, or jaw.

Why does a pinched cervical nerve cause arm pain?

Two nerves that originate in your neck run down your arm and into your hand. When either nerve is pinched at the spine, the resulting nerve irritation causes pain, tingling, and numbness that radiates along the full length of the nerve, traveling down your arm and possibly into your hand.

You may also feel an electric shock or burning sensation that suddenly shoots down your arm. In severe cases, a compressed cervical nerve leads to weakness in your arm.

How is arm pain treated?

After completing a thorough examination to determine the cause of your arm pain, Dr. Vujicic develops a customized treatment plan using one or more therapies such as:

  • Epidural steroid injection
  • Trigger point injection
  • Spinal cord stimulator
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Nerve block

When Dr. Vujicic administers injections to the spine or peripheral nerves, he uses real-time ultrasound imaging so he can see the needle and ensure your injection reaches the precise nerve or nerve root.
